Names in the News: cow chiropractor Dr. Sara Gilbertson

June 20, 2012
Q&A with a Midwestern vet whose chiropractic practice was highlighted in a widely run Associated Press article Dr. Sara Gilbertson is an equine and dairy veterinarian based in New Holstein, Wisconsin, who owns a mobile practice, Lake to Lake Veterinary Chiropractic LLC. She was featured April 28 in her local paper, the Herald Times Reporter – Manitowoc, and a month later in an Associated Press story on cow comfort that ran nationwide. Click here to read the AP story. How did these articles come about? A client of mine is a freelance writer. I asked her if she’d do a press release stating that I was doing chiropractic and regular veterinary medicine. In February, the press release was done to just local papers.

"Think back to 15 years ago, and consider what’s happened since, the destabilizing events — in the world, in your country, in the markets, in your work, in your life—that defied all expectations. We can be astonished, confounded, shocked, stunned, delighted, or terrified, but rarely prescient.

Wisconsin veterinarian writes book about Everest ascent

June 19, 2012
Veterinarian Lance Fox climbed Mount Everest to honor an inspiration he had while staying at the hospital with his premature son. Fox, whose father died at age 36, was already well aware of the fragility of life and his newborn son’s hospital stay only re-enforced his resolution to live life to the fullest. Nearly nine years later, on May 21, 2009, Fox watched the sun rise from a spot 28,500 feet up Mount Everest.

Obama to permit young migrants to remain in U.S.

June 19, 2012
Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children will be allowed to remain in the country without fear of deportation and able to work, under an executive action the Obama administration announced on Friday, reported The New York Times. Administration officials said the president used existing legal authority to make the broad policy change, which could temporarily benefit more than 800,000 young people. The policy, while not granting any permanent legal status, clears the way for young illegal immigrants to come out of the shadows, work legally and obtain driver’s licenses and many other documents they have lacked.

Celebrating dairy month in a big way

June 18, 2012
“Is there anything better on a warm, summer day than a scoop of ice cream? Does any other treat compare with the smooth, creamy, delicious taste of ice cream?” Judging by the rush of anxious spectators out in front of the capitol, not many would disagree with Lolly Lesher’s comment above.

What dairy can learn from our veal customers

June 18, 2012
In this month’s column, usually written by Executive Director John Frey, the Center for Dairy Excellence invited summer intern Rebecca Shaw to share what she learned during a recent visit to the Marcho Farms facility. The operation is based in Franconia, Pennsylvania, and processes more than 1,500 veal calves a week. Center staff visited the facility with the intention of learning more about the veal industry and the connection between the veal and dairy industries. As an intern at the Center for Dairy Excellence, I have the opportunity to engage in the dairy industry at many levels – from visiting local dairy farms to talking with state legislators to engaging in meetings with stakeholders from all facets of the industry.
