Integration of forage crops for managing herbicide-resistant weed seedbanks in Northeastern cropping systems

Weed control is becoming increasingly challenging for field crop producers across the Northeastern United States, including New York (N.Y.). Several factors are driving this trend, including the introduction of new and invasive weed species, the growing prevalence of herbicide resistance, increasing cost of herbicide premixes, and unpredictable weather that often limits timely field operations.

What weeds say about your soil

We often like to use the easy button on so many things. In some instances, this works for a time, but what can the long-term results be and do we attempt to understand how nature interacts and responds to the practices we do in farming? Controlling weeds is one of those easy buttons that I feel we need to take a deeper look at and understand what the weeds are trying to tell us.

What’s the payout: Using glyphosate-resistant alfalfa in grass mixtures

Glyphosate-resistant alfalfa has become a popular option for many growers throughout the U.S. for growing pure alfalfa. It offers improved flexibility in weed management, as well as overall cleaner hay and silage. Because growers can control a wide range of weeds using this technology, many fields are more easily managed and less stressful to control.

For alfalfa producers, mild winters come at a price. Thanks to hot summers and mild winters, alfalfa growers in California’s Central Valley can usually depend on six cuttings of hay each year, but since they do not experience a true winter, weed infestation in their dormant alfalfa stands can be a problem.
