Each year I consult with several different producers regarding mineral issues in their feed. Some common things I hear are: “They just aren’t thrifty,” “They aren’t gaining like they should,” or, “We had more open cows than I was expecting.”
You might expect a large animal veterinarian to focus on animal health – things like anaplasmosis, trichomoniasis and intestinal parasites. You might expect a veterinarian to focus on preg checking or semen collection.
Cows are designed to use forage. It keeps them productive and healthy. Forage quality sets the limits for how much forage we can feed and the ceiling on how well animals can perform. We include as much in rations as we can while making sure nutrient requirements are met and cows are healthy.
