Beating bugs and planning ahead

June 8, 2012
Karen Lee

It has become a nightly game in my farmhouse to “get the bugs.” My 2-year-old serves as the bug spotter while myself or my husband is the bug squasher. In the game, my daughter points and exclaims, “Bug! Bug!” until we see the fly and go after it. She then usually lets us know whether or not we were successful – even though she’s not always accurate in her proclamation.

Leave a great farm family legacy

June 8, 2012
Elaine Froese

“I wasn’t able to talk for over two years about what happened with my grandfather,” a young farmer confides as he describes a bitter battle over the transition of land titles from his father’s father to him.

I am concerned about the many threads of conversations across farm audiences this winter that weave a sad tale of loss, grief and exasperation with those farmers who are over 80 and are not finishing their farming careers well.

Three factors impact incidence of digital dermatitis

June 8, 2012
Vic Daniel

“You cannot get out of trouble using the same thought process that got you into trouble.”
—Albert Einstein

Over my 28 years as a hoof trimmer, 23 have been dealing with digital dermatitis and its effects on my clients’ cows.

For the international dairy industry, digital dermatitis (DD), more commonly known as strawberry foot, is one of these disease problems that has gone from a nuisance on a few cows in the late 1950s and 1960s to becoming the leading cause of lameness in dairy cattle in the world.

The average cost of DD per cow case is more than $105. However, when I do a farm analysis for a producer and we review the number of cows infected to examine herd costs, nearly all producers say that financial figure is too low.

Senate Farm Bill passes key procedural vote

June 7, 2012
The Senate version of the 2012 Farm Bill passed a crucial test today when 90 Senators voted in favor of bringing the bill to the floor for further consideration, according to the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF). The 2012 Farm Bill, formally designated S. 3240, passed the cloture vote Thursday by an overwhelming margin of 90-8. The measure now proceeds to the full Senate floor for debate and amendments, a process that could take several weeks before a final vote is taken. Thursday’s action “greatly increases the chances that we can get our dairy reform proposal through the Senate, as well as the House, and passed into law this year,” said Jerry Kozak, President and CEO of NMPF.

Dairymen can learn lessons from baseball

June 7, 2012
Phil Durst
It’s baseball season again! I love the game and look forward to the start of the season each spring. Sure, it’s just a game, but there are some lessons from baseball we can apply to dairy whether you are a fan or not. 1. Play the percentages In baseball, managers play the percentages – they usually go with what has a higher likelihood of success. So left-handed hitters bat against right-handed pitchers and vice versa; certain individuals will be in the lineup against certain pitchers because of their record against that pitcher; fielders shift to cover the hitting tendencies of batters (like the famous Jim Thome shift).

Successful dairy farms: What do they have in common?

June 7, 2012
Greg Squires
Several readers of my last article emailed me with a question I have repeatedly heard from customers and audiences for many years: Are there traits or characteristics which are common to successful dairy farms? If you were to ask 100 different industry professionals and dairy producers, you would undoubtedly see 100 different lists of attributes most closely linked to success. The following are among the most common traits I observe in consulting with dairy operations across the U.S.:

Age: 46 Location: St. Paul, at the Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota Your dairy industry background: I grew up on an 80-cow Holstein dairy farm on the Trent River, just outside of Campbellford, Ontario. The farm was originally established in 1835 and purchased by my great grandfather in 1922. The deed describes the transfer of “Blackie” and “Marigold,” the cows. My cousin and his wife, Ben and Lori Godden, currently operate the farm.
