I belong to... AGA: Jillian Walther

June 23, 2011
Location: Garnavillo, Iowa My dairy’s history: I am a fifth generation farmer at Rolling Prairie dairy, where we have a milking herd of 200. I farm full time with my parents, Dan & Ann Walther and my two brothers, Jordan Walther and Jaaron Walther. Registered Guernseys have been a continuous part of our family farming operation since 1924. If I wasn’t a dairyman, I would be … I would likely be an accountant. However, I have a passion for broadcast journalism, particularly radio – which would suit me well as I rarely seem to be at a loss for words.

Preg checks: Why frequency and method matter

June 23, 2011
Colten Green
The term “preg check” is a misnomer that has been used in the dairy industry for decades. No matter how you determine the reproductive status of cattle following insemination, the goal of the task is to actually find the open cows.

Sprinkler systems for cooling dairy cows at a feed line

June 23, 2011
Joe Harner
Cows experience heat stress when the temperature-humidity index (THI) is above 72. During heat stress, respiration rates increase, while milk production and reproduction decrease. One practice in heat stress control is to install sprinkler systems over the feed line and in the holding pen. The objective of the sprinkler system is to wet the cow’s back, but to avoid moisture accumulation on the udder or in freestalls. Evaporative cooling occurs when the moisture is evaporated by natural or mechanical ventilation.

On the Edge of Common Sense: The Battle of Rudy Creek

June 23, 2011
Baxter Black
Ron said it was just one of those days. In fact, it was the day before the regular auction in Ft. Pierre, South Dakota. He had sorted off a truckload of cows he needed to get rid of. They were in a rain-soaked pasture down by the road that had no corral. No sweat; he and his son hauled a set of portable panels and ramp to a wire fence by the road and assembled a loading pen. It took considerable cowboy skills to ease the bunch into the strange set-up.

The View from Here: Stabilizing our soils, watersheds

June 23, 2011
Mike Gangwer
The spring of 2011 will be recorded as a wet and cool one for central Michigan. I spent two weeks at home in Gratiot County and heard this statement from everyone. Our winter wheat, for instance, is at least three weeks behind its normal growth stage. As of the middle of May, most crop fields had not yet been planted. In any field potholes or depressional areas, water stands, making tillage difficult.

A look ahead for dairy farms in latter half of 2011

June 23, 2011
Jennifer Shike
Dairy managers continue catching up economically after a disastrous 2009 and 2010 business year, said Mike Hutjens, University of Illinois professor of animal sciences emeritus. “Milk producers need $17 per 100 pounds to cover feed, variable, fixed and labor costs with a modest return on assets,” Hutjens said. “Currently, milk prices have been favorable, but dairy managers need a full year of these margins to replace lost equity in 2009-2010.” Several factors will be critical to maintain a successful 2011 dairy business model.
