Wet pastures

How wet are your pastures?

June 6, 2011
Kevin S. Gould
Spring of 2011 had brought significant challenges to livestock grazing operations. In many areas, 10 to 12 inches of rain fell from April to May, preventing land from drying out during early-spring grazing. And recent snow melts have cause flooding in other areas.

A manure spreading window of opportunity

June 6, 2011

Letters to the editor: FFTF policy

June 6, 2011
Editor, National Milk Producers Federation does not represent the nation’s dairy producers. They represent co-ops and processors. In their new FFTF policy, they want to eliminate the minimum pay price and have us buy gross margin insurance to protect our losses. You cannot buy enough to make yourself profitable.

On the Edge of Common Sense: Consolation

June 6, 2011
Baxter Black
To my aching friend, Thanks for writing about your mother. I empathize with your need to let the air out before you blow your top. It’s the reversal of roles. Now you are the parent, the responsible one. She is the one unable to do her part. You have a particularly crushing affliction to deal with: Alzheimer’s. It is a slow poison. It stretches the heartstrings until the one you care for becomes a stranger.

Wet conditions can spawn more mastitis

June 6, 2011
Spring opens new windows of opportunity for mastitis infections to take hold. Wet, muddy conditions, especially in areas hit by heavy rainfall or flooding caused by snow melting, make it more difficult to keep cows clean. “Water is the perfect transport medium for many mastitis-causing bacteria,” says Jorge Noricumbo, quality milk manager for Pfizer Animal Health, based in Visalia, California. “A wet, muddy environment makes it easier for bacteria to enter the teat end and establish new mastitis infections. Managing mastitis is a major challenge this time of year, particularly where cows are housed in open lots or corrals.”

Presentation introduces ‘biologically appropriate nutrition’

June 6, 2011
What’s become conventional calf feeding isn’t necessarily what’s closest to “natural” calf growth programs. That’s according to Dr. Jim Drackley of the University of Illinois during his presentation at Vita Plus Dairy Summit 2010. Calf feeding programs that are most successful nutritionally mimic cow’s milk. Drackley introduced the idea of “biologically appropriate nutrition” to summit attendees.

The importance of heat detection

June 6, 2011
Rommel Ramos
It’s simple – accurate heat detection programs lead to higher pregnancy rates. Higher pregnancy rates result in more pregnant cows, fewer days open and more profitability for the dairy. Having spent 11 years as the manager of a breeding team in Saudi Arabia and 14 years on different dairies (in Arizona and Oregon), I have seen firsthand the universality of good heat detection programs. Regardless of herd size, facility setup or climate, a successful reproductive program begins with knowledge and application of heat detection principles.

Grazing conference moves to Springfield, Missouri

June 6, 2011
The Missouri Dairy Grazing Conference planned for July 6-8 has been moved from Joplin to Springfield, Missouri. Joplin, Missouri experienced significant destruction from an EF5 Tornado in May 2011. Although the Holiday Inn (where the conference was to be held) did not experience any physical damage, it has become a major support facility for multiple agencies needed to sustain displaced residents and facilitate the rebuilding effort.
