Professionalism is the theme to 2011 Manure Expo

The theme of the 2011 North American Manure Expo is Professionalism in Manure Management and will include commercial field demonstrations, "hands-on" product and safety education, educational sessions and commercial vendor displays. For the first time the event will be held in Nebraska at the Northeast Community College’s Ag Complex in Norfolk. It will take place on Wednesday, July 20, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Soy-based livestock insecticide to be tested on farms this summer

A company using soybean oil to replace petroleum-based toner in printer cartridges will test its latest soy-based replacement product this summer on U.S. livestock operations. SoyPrint's new soy-based insecticide is made from 95 percent soy products at various stages of refinement and is non-toxic and not harmful to livestock. It kills with effectiveness most exoskeleton insects that come in contact with it.

The road to summer grazing profits

May feeder cattle futures prices have dropped about $10/cwt since the beginning of April despite nearly a $1/bu drop in May corn futures prices during that time. The weakness in feeder cattle prices resulted from an almost $12/cwt drop in live cattle prices in the past six weeks. Thus, projected losses on current placements are in excess of $100/head. Placements in April, though, would have had somewhat better projected profit prospects. This Friday's Cattle on Feed report is expected to show April placements up around 6 percent compared to last year.

California Mastitis Test and milk quality

Mastitis continues to be one of the most costly problems in many dairy farms. Mastitis can manifest itself in either clinical or subclinical form. Clinical mastitis is when milk appears abnormal (the presence of flakes, clots, strings or if it is watery). The mammary gland also may be warm or hard to the touch and may exhibit increased sensitivity. In severe cases, systemic signs may be apparent, such as fever, cow off feed or in shock. Subclinical mastitis occurs when both milk and mammary gland appear normal but somatic cell counts (SCC) are elevated to a level above 200,000 cells per mL.
