Lallemand releases new micro-cell formulation

November 22, 2011
Lallemand Animal Nutrition, North America, has released a new formulation of MICRO-CELL: Micro-Cell LA 1-Gram. MICRO-CELL LA is a strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus BT-1386 which colonizes the lower gut of beef cattle fed all types of rations and competitively inhibits certain bacterial strains. In a pooled summary of eight feedlot trials calves fed MICRO-CELL LA throughout the feeding period had greater Average Daily Gain +4.2% (P<0.01) and improved Feed Conversion +3.2% (P=0.02) when compared to control calves.  Additionally, in other research, up to 70% fewer calves fed MICRO-CELL LA tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7 in their feces when compared to control calves. Research shows that most health challenges faced by cattle occur during the initial receiving period, and that healthier cattle are more profitable. The strain of L. acidophilus used in MICRO-CELL LA 1 GRAM was selected for its ability to attach to intestinal epithelial cells. The product works particularly well in newly received high stress/high risk cattle, but should be fed for the entire feeding period full performance and pre-harvest intervention benefits. Due to its high concentration, MICRO-CELL LA is a low inclusion feed additive, so follow label directions for use.  *MICRO-CELL LA 1GRAM is currently only available in the US.

Let’s all give thanks

November 22, 2011
A chill in the air means the holiday season is fast-approaching, beginning with Thanksgiving. It’s a time to give thanks for our families, friends, health and prosperity. We should also be thankful for a food system that provides a safe, affordable and abundant food supply. Our Thanksgiving meal, whether the main course is turkey or tofurkey, is made possible by the dedicated people throughout the entire food chain – farmers, processors, grocers, and others – each of whom works hard to make it possible. Since 1970, turkey consumption in the United States has increased by 102 percent. The ability of U.S. farmers to raise more birds using less land, water, and feed provides that turkey at Thanksgiving and year-round. In fact, from 1960 to 2010, the land required to produce all the meat, milk and eggs for every person in the U.S. declined by two thirds.

Dairy processing plant top priority in southwest Kansas

November 22, 2011
Attracting a processing plant that would support southwest Kansas dairy farms is a top priority for Kansas governor Sam Brownback's administration, but dairy industry officials say the region needs to have more cows before the effort will succeed. More than 70,000 cows are milked daily in western Kansas, where a few dozen large dairies have opened in the last 20 years. Brownback's administration would like to attract something like a cheese factory or a milk processing plant to help the region's economy.
