Producers discuss genomics testing

to jump to the article. Summary: Since genomics testing officially began in January of 2009, it has developed a wider application in the dairy industry. During a producer roundtable discussion, held by Alta Genetics in January 2011, Nate Zwald explained how genomics testing their herds can ultimately improve the genetic progress of their operations. Because this article was so popular, we asked Zwald a follow-up question: Q: What factors make it profitable for a herd to genomic test their females? A: Genomic testing females can be a profitable part of a complete genetic plan, but the investment cost needs to be weighed against the benefit. Here are some points to consider: 1. You have to take action on the results of a genomic test. Without different decisions than you would do otherwise, you have no opportunity to benefit from this testing. Too often I have heard about "introductory testing" which is done, and results received, but nothing was done with them.

Horizon adds 100 certified organic family farmers in 2010

Horizon announced it now works with nearly 600 certified organic family farmers nationwide to supply organic milk to consumers. In addition to the 531 certified organic family farmers currently providing organic milk to Horizon, there are 61 additional farms under contract with the company that will begin supplying milk during the next several months after all transition steps have been met.

Labor management programs to be held in Minnesota

One of the greatest challenges facing farmers is the management of a labor force. Effective management of hired labor can have a profound effect on the overall profitability of a farming operation. University of Minnesota Extension will offer three Labor Management Programs. The programs are titled, “Employment Skills for Today: Planning for Success.” Farm owners and managers who oversee family and non-family labor should consider attending. There is no cost for these programs; however, to plan for program materials as well as noon meal arrangements, pre-registration is required.

Southwest Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association offers young dairy producer scholarship

The Southwestern Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (SWCMA) is announcing their ninth annual Young Dairy Producer Educational Scholarship, an individual scholarship to allow a young dairy producer to pursue dairy (milk) production educational opportunities. This year's scholarship amount will be in the amount of $2,000 to further encourage young dairy producers to continue in the dairy industry and help maintain the supply of milk to area cheese plants. All students whose Wisconsin-based dairy farm markets their milk to any SWCMA member plant is eligible to apply. Family members or farm employee family members are both eligible to apply for this scholarship.
