On the Edge of Common Sense: The sneak attack

July 20, 2011
Baxter Black
There is more than one definition for pasture roping, as Carter pointed out to me. It was during calving season. He and his wife were making the 5 p.m. heifer check.

Update on dairy air quality emissions

July 20, 2011
Kathryn Walker
This spring the Western States Dairy Producer Trade Association held the Western Dairy Air Quality Symposium in Sacramento, California. Researchers from across the country presented the latest information about dairy farm air emissions. The data was informative and overwhelming, but key take-home messages from the symposium were: 1. The dairy industry has increased its understanding of on-farm air emissions, but there is still more to learn. 2. Regulations are likely to occur but hopefully not to the extent the industry expected. 3. There will always be concern from the public about dairy farms impacting the environment.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus: Is my herd at risk?

July 20, 2011
Michelle Arnold
BVD disease is one of the most complicated viral diseases in dairy cattle worldwide. Terms associated with BVD such as “cytopathic” vs. “noncytopathic,” “persistent infection” vs. “transient infection,” “types I and II” and “immunosuppression” make understanding this virus a difficult task. However, the results of this disease are very clear – economic losses due to poor performance, loss of milk production, open cows, abortions, calf sickness and death. In order to control this problem, producers must first know if the virus is circulating in their herd.

July 20, 2011
Daryl Maulfair

On the Edge of Common Sense: Father of the bride

July 20, 2011
Baxter Black
It was a chance for Kurt to shine. He was father of the bride. Kurt is a seasoned, tough-hided, bow-legged Wyoming cowboy. He was not the kind of person you would ask to help you select the bridesmaids’ dresses or the pattern on your china.

The View from Here: Consider the price

July 20, 2011
Mike Gangwer
On a hot and humid Memorial Day weekend, I visited the Arlington National Cemetery. There, on the green hills and beneath the frequent shade trees, the white stone markers jut up so we may read the attributes of our fellow soldiers and civilians.

NCBA criticizes egg producers' deal with HSUS

July 19, 2011
National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall said a July 7, 2011, agreement between the United Egg Producers (UEP) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) raises concern for all livestock producers. How much risk to the corn crop?

July 19, 2011
A number of factors combine each year to determine the U.S. average corn yield.  Among those factors, temperature and precipitation during July are the most important.  Crop yield models have long confirmed the large yield impact of July weather.  The most favorable weather conditions in July in the heart of the corn belt consist of temperatures that are modestly below average and precipitation that is about 25 percent above average.  These are the kind of conditions that were experienced in 2009 and contributed to the record high U.S. average yield that year.  Historically, such conditions over large areas have been rare.
