2011 PDP Foundation Silent Auction results announced

April 11, 2011
More than 70 auction items donated by dairy industry enthusiasts brought a total of $20,000 for dairy education programs of the Professional Dairy Producers Foundation in its 2011 Silent Auction. A package of 100 units of Semex Semen with tank topped the auction at $2,850. Dairy Producer Loren Greenfield from Markesan, Wisconsin, purchased the semen units and Justin Daniels of Kansasville, Wisconsin, purchased the semen storage tank, donated by Semex and ai24. Twelve tons of dry distillers grain donated by United Wisconsin Grain Producers garnered the second-highest amount of $2,100, purchased by Russ Warmka of Fox Lake, Wisconsin.

MMPA recognizes 35-year members

Twenty-nine Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) members were recognized as 35-year members at the 95th MMPA State Annual Delegate Meeting, March 15. MMPA President Ken Nobis congratulated and praised the members for their dedication to the cooperative. “We commend you for your dedication and loyalty to MMPA and the dairy industry over the last 35 years,” said President Nobis as he awarded each member with a plaque.

Pennsylvania soybean checkoff board awards $57,572 for four research projects

April 11, 2011
Four soybean research projects designed to provide reliable data to soybean growers and livestock producers who use soymeal have been awarded checkoff grants totaling $57,572 for the coming crop year by the Pennsylvania Soybean Promotion Board. The all-farmer board, which administers the national soybean checkoff program in the commonwealth, took the action in a day-long meeting with researchers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in mid-March.

National Mastitis Council celebrates 50 years of milk quality

The 50th Annual Meeting of the National Mastitis Council (NMC), held Jan. 23-26, in Arlington, Virginia, attracted 400 individuals. The event commemorated the organization’s long standing commitment to mastitis control and milk quality and the kick-off to a year-long celebration of NMC’s 50 years. Attendees from all over the world represented various facets of the dairy industry, including dairy producers, veterinarians, researchers, consultants, equipment and pharmaceutical suppliers, dairy plant field staff, extension educators and students.

Label upgrade for DuPont Velpar L herbicide allows more pasture grazing and harvest options

April 11, 2011
Beef and forage producers now have more grazing and haying flexibility when using DuPont Velpar L herbicide for smutgrass control on Bermuda grass and bahiagrass acres. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted DuPont registration approval for a broader label that allows livestock to be grazed on pasture immediately following a broadcast application of Velpar L at rates of 4.5 pints per acre or less.
