“What is my somatic cell count (SCC)?” “How can I lower my SCC?” “My cell count is going up; it must be the dip.”

How to maximize performance and efficiency of CIP routines

October 1, 2020
Ron Robinson

“That’s the way we have always done it.” That is a very scary phrase. It typically implies that you are not changing or looking to improve. It can also imply that you have done it for so long, you may be getting lax in some areas and not realize it.

October 31, 2013

There is nothing more frustrating than persistent high bacteria counts. The CIP detectives were recently called to a 249-cow dairy in Wisconsin facing just this problem.

CIP detectives count multiple ways to count less bacteria

August 9, 2013
Ron Robinson
High bacteria counts are always a concern for a dairy, but fluctuating bacteria counts can signify even more complex problems. The CIP detectives recently visited a 300-cow dairy in northwestern Wisconsin that was facing such a problem.

Detecting the reasons for disappearing daily gains

January 18, 2013
Ron Robinson
Like young humans, calves are more susceptible to bacterial infections than their adult counterparts. And just as you wouldn’t serve your children’s dinner on a dirty plate or allow them to sleep in dirty beds, it’s important for calf-feeding operations to ensure that proper sanitation methods are in place to prevent calves from being exposed to potentially harmful contaminants in their food or bedding.

Cutting corners on equipment can slash premiums

October 29, 2012
Ron Robinson
Building a new milking facility – or renovating an old one – can be nerve-racking. There are so many decisions to make, and you need to move quickly so production can begin as soon as possible. But as we uncovered, it doesn’t pay to cut corners by installing equipment that isn’t up to the task. You may save a few dollars in upfront costs, but if your system is inadequate to allow for proper cleaning, your premium losses will be criminal.

The lowdown on low-temp CIP detergents

September 19, 2012
Ron Robinson
Typical alkaline detergents are effective in water temperatures from 170°F down to 120°F and, in most CIP situations, that’s an acceptable range. However, when called to diagnose CIP system issues, we more often than not find that water temperatures are inadequate at the end of the cleaning cycle to fully clean the system. This situation is common when dairies expand their system while trying to get by with the same water heater. For these dairies, low-temperature detergents can be beneficial until an adequate heating system can be installed.

CIP Challenge: Putting a magnifying glass on maintenance

August 9, 2012
Ron Robinson
Regardless of which hemisphere you call home, if you run a dairy, maintenance issues can sneak up on you. The CIP Detectives were recently called to an 800-cow operation in Japan to catch any culprits that could be affecting milk quality. The dairy in Japan was ISO-certified for environmental management and had been successfully operating for more than 100 years. They had a 60-stall rotary parlor with a 90-lb-per-day milk average.

CIP detectives: The case of the profit bandits

March 19, 2012
Ron Robinson
In some cases, the CIP system isn’t the only culprit when PI and standard plate counts are high. So it was with a Utah producer who called, desperate for help, because high PICs and SPCs were robbing him of his bonuses. This dairy milks 1,500 cows in a 72-stall rotary parlor and had been experiencing problems since the system was built three years ago. The CIP detectives went to the scene to investigate and identified likely suspects in both the milking system and CIP system.

CIP detectives round up unusual suspects on calf ranch

November 18, 2011
Ron Robinson
High-performing CIP systems are important for the health and well-being of everyone who consumes milk, even the first customer in line for a serving – the dairy calf. At least that’s what one calf ranch operator from Texas learned recently. Calves were becoming increasingly ill with no explanation. All the usual suspects were checked: housing, bedding, feeding and health protocols. This rancher was running out of leads.
