With tough weather on its way for much of the country, available shelter – either natural or man-made – is important for maintaining cattle’s health and efficiency.
In winter, wind can be the most serious threat to the health and comfort of cattle. Although snowstorms often come to mind first when preparing for winter, being prepared to protect cattle from wind should be the priority as temperatures drop and days shorten.
The wind likes to blow on a regular basis in many areas of the country during the winter months. Couple this wind with cold temperatures and wet conditions, and the wind chill can cause a great deal of stress for cattle.
In climates where wind chill is an issue, planning for winter weather can reduce feed costs, illness and health costs, with less loss of body condition and better gains on young animals.
Cattle will naturally seek windbreaks in the winter. In cold weather, cattle require additional energy to maintain body temperature, and wind chill further increases energy demands.
