PETA proposes new welfare standards for animals on dairy farms

Summary: Progressive Dairyman Editor Karen Lee provided a preview of her "3 open minutes" interview with PETA's corporate liaison, Amber Driscoll, featured in the May 2nd issue. The preview article provided a list of the standards PETA was proposing, including an effort to end dehorning and taildocking. While the article topic drew plenty of comments, both online and via mail, we'd have to say our favorite response came from dairywoman Wilma Kint: It would give me great pleasure to place Amber Driscoll in a holding pen with a herd of Ayrshire cows with their long, sharp horns. —Wilma D. Fuller, Jr., president and CEO of Fuller Supply Company, announced at Fuller's Annual Banquet that AgriLabs, Inc. was the livestock distributor's choice as “Vendor of the Year.” In recognition of superior service and unmatched sales support, Fuller presented the award to AgriLabs Territory Manager Dana Ankerstar (photo) and stated, "In handing you this award, it must be understood that the decision to name AgriLabs as our ‘Vendor of the Year’ was not just mine, but is an honor voted on by all Fuller Sales and Management.”

The byproduct of industry: You drive by them nearly every single day and you probably don’t even realize it half the time. In fact, many folks argue vehemently that these objects disrupt the inherent beauty of the countryside. What am I describing? You guessed it... advertising billboards. Yes, the big display boards advertising the likes of Chevrolet, Budweiser and the nearest McDonald’s. What many don’t know is that the vast majority of these billboards are a printed vinyl material. Long gone are the days of physically painting and re-painting these billboards with advertising.

Oregon producers host first-ever Dairy Day at the Capitol

More than 100 dairy producers and industry supporters recently attended the Oregon Dairy Farmers Association's Dairy Day at the Capitol in Salem, Oregon. It was the first time the association has ever sponsored the event. Kathryn Walker, program director for the state association, says it brought legislators two of the three things they like –constituents and food.

Lynn, my father, and Erick, myself, make up the “Le” in Le-Ma-Re Farms. “Ma” stands for Mary, my mother, and “Re” is for Reba, my sister.

U.S. gas, food prices slowing recovery

April 21, 2011
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans are paying more for food and gas, a trend that could slow economic growth in the months ahead. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.5 percent in March, the Labor Department said Friday. That matched February's increase, the largest since the recession ended in June 2009. In the past 12 months, the index has increased 2.7 percent, the biggest rise since December 2009.
