Guernsey royalty crowned at National Guernsey Convention

August 29, 2011
The National Guernsey Convention was held in Collinsville, Illinois, June 23-27. The convention has long been recognized for the many exciting activities and contests offered for youth. Young people from Florida to Washington and many states in between were represented this year, as more than 100 junior Guernsey members travelled to Illinois to compete in the many contests and recognition programs offered by the American Guernsey Association. The National Guernsey Queen and Princess are crowned each year at the convention. They serve as ambassadors for the Guernsey breed during their one-year reign, making appearances on behalf of the AGA, speaking with visitors to AGA trade-show booths and assisting at national shows. The queen and princess are selected based on their speaking ability, poise, knowledge of the dairy industry and their ability to serve as effective ambassadors for the AGA.

Improve the reproductive performance and profitability of your herd with Repro Money

Are you looking to improve your dairy herd profitability? A new program developed by University of Wisconsin-Extension and UW-Madison researchers is designed to increase farm income by enhancing the reproductive performance of a producer’s cows. Repro Money is team-based and farmer-directed with reproduction at the center of the program, according to Connie Cordoba, UW-Extension reproductive management specialist. Producers receive the resources and tools needed to make better management decisions regarding the reproductive management of their farm.

World Dairy Expo early entry deadline closes Thursday at midnight

August 29, 2011
Cattle exhibitors wishing to compete at World Dairy Expo 2011 should log on to World Dairy Expo website now and submit their entries. According to Dairy Cattle Show Manager, Laura Herschleb, entry fees will increase at midnight (CDT) on Thursday, Sept. 1. Paper applications must also be postmarked by that date to avoid late entry fees.

Midwest Dairy adds education components at Nebraska State Fair

August 29, 2011
The 142nd Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island, Nebraska, will offer fairgoers the chance to learn more about dairy from Aug. 26 to Sept. 5. For the first year, Midwest Dairy Association is sponsoring the milking parlor, which will be accompanied by People Behind the Product and From Farm to Food to You graphics created by the organization.

Horizon Organic grants annual HOPE and National Quality Awards

August 29, 2011
Horizon Organic announced the family farmer recipients of two annual awards: the HOPE Award, which honors farmers who advocate organic agriculture; and the Quality Award, which recognizes the Horizon farmer who produces the highest quality organic milk in the entire Horizon milk supply. The Hardy family of Farmington, Maine, received the 2011 Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Award, while the Sheen family of Gouverneur, New York, was recognized with the 2011 National Quality Award, during Farm Aid’s annual benefit concert at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

Ag Progress Days showgoers breathed easier thanks to soy-based dust suppressant

The thousands of showgoers that attended Ag Progress Days in Rock Springs, Pennsylvania, from Aug. 16-18 could breathe a little easier thanks to the state’s soybean growers. That's because the Ag Progress Days staff, working with the Pennsylvania Soybean Board, controlled the dust from the show’s gravel roads through a soy-based dust control agent known as DustKill.
