Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle help feed the world. Not only are the cows profit drivers at the ranch, but they convert at the bunk and they grade on the rail. At the end of the day, the goal of the beef industry is to produce a product that consumers can enjoy during a nutritious dinner at the family table. It requires many different factors to get a product to the consumer. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle are more in demand and are fulfilling their role in producing a good product for the consumer. 

Almost every dairy producer has questioned whether it makes sense to hire a custom harvester or complete harvest themselves. Some have done in-depth analyses of the two strategies by considering different financial variables, such as cost of ownership, labor, depreciation, interest, repairs and how their balance sheet would be affected. However, all of that is often thrown out the window in favor of one very tangible and a few intangible considerations.

The California Alfalfa and Forage Research Foundation, formed in 2015, is pleased to announce that it has awarded its first round of research grants. In April of this year, the foundation circulated a request for research grant proposals available to researchers from any California university. Interested parties were asked to submit proposals for consideration that would support research activities that are of vital interest and direct benefit to California alfalfa and forage growers.

June 2018’s Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPP-Dairy) margin calculations ended a four-month string below $7 per hundredweight (cwt), but dairy producers who purchased coverage at the $7.50 and $8 per cwt margin levels will receive indemnity payments for a fifth consecutive month.
