March is an exciting time. Temperatures start creeping up slowly, days get longer, and many producers in the Midwest and North begin to see the results of their 2016 mating decisions.

Life is not always heads or tails, black and white, or pass-fail. When it comes to beef, certain traits, like tenderness, are easier to quantify than others.

I recently saw an ad on Facebook for The Bachelor of a bunch of very well-dressed young ladies feeding dairy calves and shoveling manure out of a cattle barn. It was like a train wreck – painful to watch, but I couldn’t look away!

“I was born and raised on the dairy,” says Rob Seiber, owner of Seiber Dairy in Wiggins, Colorado. “I always knew this is where I wanted to be.”

Come on, spring! I type that with a great deal of gusto, but honestly, it seems selfish to say. Michigan has had a great winter. We only had short stretches of really cold weather.
