Finding the right effluent pump

Dairies have effluent in many places. Manure pits, parlor water, effluent from settling basins and runoff are common sources. There are several things to consider when selecting a pump. One of the first is finding a pump that will handle the pressure and head from the effluent lines. The higher the elevation is that the effluent has to be pumped, the higher the head pressure.

In light of recent events, I think the seminar’s other main topic needs special attention – crisis management. Remember these two recent events: A half-hour blackout at the Super Bowl. A disabled, partially flooded Carnival cruise ship towed for several days into port.

In Focus: Virginia Tech will serve students milk from campus dairy

Virginia Tech Dining Services has partnered with the Department of Dairy Science to offer “Virginia Tech Milk.” Whole milk, skim milk and 1 percent chocolate milk will all be offered. Students will harvest the milk on campus from the herd of dairy cows at Virginia Tech’s Dairy Center. The milk will then be pasteurized by the James River Department of Agribusiness and served through the milk dispensers at Dietrick Hall.
