On January 14, from noon to 1 p.m. CST, Dr. Chad Dechow will present, "Potential and Pitfalls for Genomic Selection."
Dechow is an associate professor of dairy cattle genetics in the Penn State University's Animal Sciences Department. He teaches principles of animal breeding, dairy problem solving and dairy cattle evaluation and selection, among other courses.

California’s $8 billion dairy industry is in crisis in large part because corn prices have risen 60 percent since June. Animal feed now accounts for more than 70 percent of farmers’ total dairy operating costs, according to California Dairies, Inc., the state’s leading dairy processing cooperative.
It used to be so easy. We didn’t decide whether fields would be harvested for corn grain or silage until the end of the season. Usually the worst-looking corn was taken for silage.
In the past, there was very little data on corn silage quality or performance, and hybrids were chosen based on grain yield. Until recently, we ignored the nutrient qualities of our corn silage hybrids.

Chobani celebrated the opening of their yogurt manufacturing facility in Twin Falls, Idaho, on December 18.

The USDA has calculated and distributed some form of dairy cattle genetic evaluations since 1926. These genetic evaluations have played a major role in the average annual milk production of a U.S. dairy cow tripling in the past 50 years, from about 7,000 pounds per cow to now more than 21,000 pounds. And these evaluations have helped the U.S. become the world’s leader in dairy cattle genetics.
