Food every place, any place: Ever-changing food distribution

June 22, 2012
John Lundeen and Steve Wald
In 1988, talk began of Walmart opening its first supercenter with plans to have over 200 supercenters throughout the U.S. by 1995. To think that Walmart supercenters could go from zero to 200 stores in such a short period of time, especially considering the need for such an intense focus and learning curve on the extremely important perishables category, surprised food experts.

Feeding cattle when drought takes the pasture

June 22, 2012
Robert Fears
We all hope that the severe drought of 2011 is over. If it is, we need to use what we learned and write a preparation plan for the next one.

Irons in the fire: Keep scars, leave wounds behind

June 22, 2012
Paul Marchant
The other day, I was doctoring a horse that had ripped his leg up pretty good on an old piece of equipment in the corner of the horse pasture. We’ve been treating him for a couple of weeks now. This particular buckskin gelding has had his share of misfortune and he’s got the scars to prove it. He’s not really lame anymore, and he’s sound, but he’s going to have a couple more scars to show for his overactive curiosity.

It's the Pitts: Make up your mind

June 22, 2012
Lee Pitts
I’m confused. There are people who love cheese but don’t like cows, and folks who’ve made a religion out of wine and worship the fruit of the grape, yet they hate the agricultural industry. They love whole grains but detest wheat farmers. They blame beef and cow flatulence for all the world’s problems, yet they build expensive outdoor kitchens for barbecuing. I’m confused about meat-eating vegetarians who call themselves “flexitarians” and lacto-ovo vegetarians who dine on brie and frappacinos.

On the Edge of Common Sense: Testosterone Toro

June 22, 2012
Baxter Black
Back in Timber’s youth he got a job helpin’ gather wild cattle out of the fields of an Arizona cotton farmer. He and his pardner, Jessie, tried roping them but were unsuccessful. One, the cows only came into the field at night along with the native deer. Two, the horses were not nocturnally trained and wouldn’t get within a rope’s length of the stealthy beasts. Plan Two involved the use of a tranquilizer gun. The second night our boys arrived ‘loaded for bear,’ as they say, and began stalking their prey.

Your age: 68. I’m a third-generation Jersey dairyman. Your location: Eastern New York, just 15 miles from downtown Albany – nearby but not pressured by a suburban community. My dairy’s history: Dutch Hollow Farm was started in 1976 after being involved with my family’s farm for 13 years. We started with 55 milking-age females, mostly growth of my original 4-H project animals, along with some purchased females.

Your age: 59 Your location: Seneca, Kansas My dairy’s history: Sue and I started milking 20 Jerseys in 1988 and have grown our dairy (Heartland Jerseys) to 470 cows, 370 heifers and 230 bulls and steers. Your age: 24 Your location: Jefferson, Oregon My dairy’s history: Desert Park is a registered Jersey farm established in 1983. My dad started out milking 350 cows on a dairy he leased in Mesa, Arizona. He expanded and bought a dairy west of Phoenix in 1993 where we milked 1,300 cows. Later, we downsized the dairy to make it more family-oriented and moved to where we are today, in Oregon, where we milk 450 registered Jerseys.
