Organic Valley launches fluid milk product from 100 percent grass-fed cows

Organic Valley Grassmilk is the first refrigerated milk said to be produced from cows that are 100 percent grass-fed. New in the U.S., the product is the innovation of the week from Datamonitor’s Product Launch Analytics. The cows that produce Organic Valley Grassmilk eat only fresh grasses and dried forages, like hay – no soybeans or supplemental grains.

I grew up on my family’s farm, Honey Creek Heritage Farm, near Sauk City, Wisconsin. A few years ago, my parents transitioned from a dairy operation running 120 registered Holsteins to a 35-head Red Angus beef cattle lifestyle farm. Growing up, I helped my father milk our cows and showed heifers through 4-H in our local fair and at the Wisconsin State Fair. Q. What previous internship positions have you held? My previous internships include working for Voyager Press/MBI Publishing as a freelance photographer where I captured livestock and animal photography for five internationally published books: How to Raise Cattle, How to Raise Pigs, How to Raise Sheep, The Complete Book of Butchering, Smoking, Curing, and Sausage Making and Wisconsin Local Food Marketing Guide.

I assisted with feeding calves, yard work and tractor driving during the harvest seasons. Q. What previous internship positions have you held? I served as the intern for the Wisconsin State Fair agricultural department. Sign up for the Census of Agriculture by July 1

The USDA is preparing to mail the 2012 Census of Agriculture to millions of U.S. farmers and ranchers in late December. Producers are reminded not to miss their opportunity to be counted by signing up for the Census before July 1. The Census of Agriculture is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. A farm is defined as any place that produced and sold – or normally would have sold – $1,000 or more of agricultural products during the Census year (2012).

Advice on managing forage as drought increases in Arkansas

Forage producers need to preserve any remaining forage as drought tightens its grip on Arkansas, said John Jennings, extension forage specialist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, area covered by a drought classification jumped from just below 25 percent to more than 94 percent in late May. “The likelihood of a record-setting dry spring across most of the state is very unsettling for forage and livestock growers,” said Jennings.

Stem rust in fescue fields impacting Missouri producers

June 25, 2012

In late May, rust on tall fescue was observed in southwest Missouri fields from Preston to Weaubleau in Hickory County, in addition to cases reported in neighboring counties.

“There are several species of rust fungi that attack grass plants,” said Brie Menjoulet, agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension.
