Take winter precautions for dairy animals

As winter brings Arctic air to many areas, dairy producers should be prepared for conditions that can affect young stock and lactating cows. South Dakota Cooperative Extension Dairy Specialist Alvaro Garcia says producers should protect young calves from inclement weather and air drafts and should provide clean, dry bedding. “If using milk replacer, choose those that contain 20 percent fat, as they provide additional energy,” Garcia says.

Former Dairyman Magazine publisher passes away

Robert M. McCune died October 29, 2011, at his home in Corona, California, at the age of 99. Born in Spokane, Washington, he moved to California when he was 13. Robert started work at 17 with a stock and bond firm in L.A. during the Depression. When the company went bankrupt, he went into the dairy industry. Robert was a partner and dairy broker, with his son Jim and Rick Bondar, of McCune and Associates, co-owner of both Flamingo Dairy and Corona Livestock Auction and publisher of The Dairyman Magazine for more than 65 years.
