The National FFA Organization is now accepting applications for its 2011 New Century Farmer conference.
The exclusive, highly competitive conference is open to college of agriculture students who intend to pursue careers in production agriculture after college. Those selected to attend the conference will be among the first in the nation to learn about the latest technological developments in the agriculture industry, and will receive business management advice from top industry leaders. The program will also help students begin to develop a nationwide network of industry professionals and colleagues to whom they can turn for support when they begin their own operations.
More than 100 dairy farmers and industry related experts and business people took part in this year’s I-29 Dairy Conference. Attendees represented the five-state area of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Among the keynote speakers was Dr. Temple Grandin, Colorado State professor, who is well known for her animal handling practices.
Perfect weather and a much improved dairy economy helped encourage attendance at World Ag Expo in 2011. Many local vendors and long-standing exhibitors said it had been over a decade since they remember having three straight days of sunny, warm weather for the annual show held the second week of February in Tulare, California.
Business Conference "Pathways to Profit," March 15-16, in Madison, Wisconsin, attendees will have the opportunity to hear and interact with many different speakers, including Stephen M.R. Covey, who is making his mark in the business world for his insight on trust and how trust can make organizations more profitable, people more promotable and relationships more energizing.
Stephen M.R. Covey will zero in on the trust issue when he delivers the opening keynote address. During his "Building Your Future on Trust" keynote, Covey will outline why and how to make building trust an explicit goal, how individuals perceive the trustworthiness of others and how to use the "language of trust" as an important cultural lever.

Early this morning I read this blogpost (http://www.ethanolrfa.org/exchange/entry/ethanol-fact-vacuum)from the Renewable Fuels Association:
In it, the author claims that "America is still feeding the same amount of corn to livestock it historically has." According to USDA data, feed corn and corn byproduct usage declined from 2008 through 2009.
To RFA's credit, total livestock populations on feed during that time were nose-diving and depressed, as was the economy. The latest estimates from last month indicate feed corn use will increase slightly during the current marketing year, spanning Sept. 2010 to Aug. 2011.

Summary: In a February e-newsletter, we reprinted an article from Dairy Farmers of America's Mideast Area Council, featuring Joe Ramsier and two recently installed Lely robots on his Rittman, Ohio, dairy. We asked Ramsier to provide some insight on his decision to make the change in his operation. We recently learned that Ramsier's dairy suffered a barn fire in July, resulting in the loss of the main barn, one of the robots, the milkhouse and office, as well as several pieces of equipment.
Ramsier remains positive as his family begins to rebuild the operation. "Thankfully no animals or people were hurt or lost," he told us in an email.

The USDA’s weekly Export Sales report and weekly reports of export inspections provide timely information about export demand for U.S. agricultural commodities. The U.S. Census Bureau, however, is the official source of export estimates. The monthly Census Bureau reports are not as timely as USDA reports, but provide an opportunity to reassess export progress during the marketing year.
