USDA scientists discover origin of FMD virus in cattle

December 14, 2010
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists have identified the primary site where the virus that causes foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) begins infection in cattle. This discovery could lead to development of new vaccines to control and potentially eradicate FMD, a highly contagious and sometimes fatal viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals that is considered the most economically devastating livestock disease in the world.

2010 Southern Dairy Challenge: Producer feedback

December 9, 2010
The Southern Regional Dairy Challenge was held November 18-20 at Mississippi State University in Tupelo, Mississippi. The host farms were Graham Dairy in Thaxton and Heritage Dairy Farm in Holly Springs. Jeremy Graham (pictured at right) of Graham Dairy and Grandy Ladner of Heritage Dairy Farm shared their thoughts on the event. Q. What suggestion from the students are you most likely to implement on your operation? GRAHAM: The students recommended altering the transition diet for our dry cows. We are primarily a grass-based dairy, and we have used corn silage as a supplement for only the milking herd. So it's an abrupt change, especially for the first calf heifers, to go from a diet with no corn silage to one with it. We're also looking at ways to improve our somatic cell count.

Good, better and best books for the New Year

December 7, 2010
As we leave yet another difficult year, it is easy to lay our failings on outside forces and other people. While failures can certainly come from outside, triumph always comes from within ourselves. Seventeen centuries ago, St. Jerome, the translator of the Latin Vulgate Bible, wrote, “Be at peace with your own soul, then heaven and earth will be at peace with you.” If our peace and our triumph come from within, then it only makes sense that we should take steps to improve ourselves. Physical training, while important, will not alone bring success. We need to think. St. Jerome said it this way, “What good is speed if the brain has oozed out on the way?” By pushing ourselves in what we know, we cannot only have a greater peace within ourselves, but an understanding of how we can respond to the forces outside our control. Even recent history helps.
