Vivian Arndt really loves her calves

“Have you beheld a man (or woman) skillful in his work? Before Kings is where he will station himself; he will not station himself before commonplace men.” So says Proverbs 22:29. We have all observed certain individuals who just seem to excel at their given occupation.

What group does that cow belong in? Does it matter?

August 9, 2013
Harley Wagenseller
“What group does that cow go in?” This was a question posed to me a couple of years ago by a young man trying to re-organize a neglected dairy. He had so many questions that I ended up writing a three-part article titled “How to Bring Your Dairy Back to Life” back in 2011 for this fine magazine.

Let the cows be cows

February 28, 2013
Harley Wagenseller
As far as possible, I always try to let the cows be cows. What do I mean by that, you may ask? Cows, by their very nature, can at times do some pretty interesting things. Being on a farm where the grazing animals are Holstein, Jersey and three-way crosses gives you a nice cross-section of all the different personalities one can encounter on a dairy.

Lessons learned from a good-looking dairy job gone bad

October 11, 2011
Harley Wagenseller
Is it possible that you can be a loyal employee to a great company but yet feel that you don’t want to work there any longer? This happened several years ago to an acquaintance of mine. I would like to relate what happened to him to see if there are any life lessons we can learn. Some years ago, my friend applied for a herdsman position on a 500-cow dairy. The farm visit went well, as both parties asked questions back and forth.

Is it a pet peeve, costing you money or costing everyone?

July 20, 2011
Harley Wagenseller
Often in our dairy lives we meet with different situations that you can label either irritating or costly. Some of these irritations (pet peeves) can be from either family members or employees. But beyond being annoying, are some of these issues even costly? Let’s examine a few of these areas to see whether we should tolerate some pet peeves or not. At times we all get a “brain cramp” and do something rather stupid, inconsiderate or neglectful of protocols or common sense.

How to bring your dairy back to life – Part III

May 16, 2011
Harley Wagenseller
In the first two parts (Click here for Part I and click here for Part II) of our discussion, we contemplated a wide variety of topics to keep your dairy healthy. In our third and final part, we will talk about saving money by becoming more energy-efficient, assessing your financial situation and putting a good team together to help you manage the dairy. Let’s first talk about energy savings on your dairy. Why should you care about this? If your dairy needs to “come back to life,” you must seriously look at this category as well as “cow categories.”

How to bring your dairy back to life – Stage 2

April 27, 2011
Harley Wagenseller
In a previous article, I discussed three different areas where you can work to save your dairy from possible failure. If you will recall, I had the experience of being asked what it takes to bring a dairy back to life. It’s no small job! We discussed the need to know your production and reproduction numbers if you’re going to heal. Your feeding must be timely and orderly, because this is your largest expense. Also, don’t overlook the fact that your labor force must be able and willing to implement your protocols for you to survive.

How to bring your dairy back to life

March 16, 2011
Harley Wagenseller
I have been asked twice in the last five years, “How do I turn my dairy around? How can I resurrect my farm from near death to a vibrant dairy that people look at and admire?” What I did was break down these different areas of concern into several different categories.
