California producers and processors discuss marketing orders

October 29, 2012
Cecilia Parsons
Looking for another avenue to price relief, California dairy producers and processors gathered in Tulare Sept. 20 to explore federal milk marketing orders. One of the key findings in the study points the finger directly at agriculture. Fertilizers and animal wastes applied to cropland are by far the largest regional sources of nitrate in groundwater, the study said.

A look at milk overproduction

May 18, 2012
Cecilia Parsons
California milk production usually takes a dip in the wet, cold months of December through February. That didn’t happen this year – and now dairy producers will have to make amends. Penalties for more than assigned baseline have been levied as processors try to convince dairy producers to cut back. But a rollback in the tide of milk might be tough.

Technology helps boost forage ration potential

September 16, 2011
Cecilia Parsons
The concept of a forage-heavy ration might seem like a step back in time, but thanks to technology that ration is looking futuristic. Cow genetics and herd management have made huge strides in the past 20 to 30 years, so it makes sense to have similar advances in crop production and fertility management.
