The Bohning Company is a small family and veteran owned company of 40 employees, located 18 miles from the nearest town in the northwest corner of Michigan’s lower peninsula. It is an area rich in state and national forest, dairy and crop farms, with small communities tied to the land.
Research and development area are a key component of how we build for the future. Current agricultural projects include updating, repeating and comparing results from a series of tests we did 4 years ago on the strength of adhesives commonly used in the dairy industry. Part of the project evaluates adhesive performance when used with various types of wood and different plastics used to manufacture hoof blocks. How long these numerous materials last and under what conditions, to include the causes of block adhesion failures, are other aspects of this specific R&D project.
How long newly developed biodegradable materials take to break down and dissolve into the Earth is another R&D project. Our tests includes finding biodegradable pigments (most pigments are not truly biodegradable), what the best designs are for hoof durability, and how to engineer blocks to avoid damaging the many different manure collection systems are other R&D projects.
