As we begin another year, I’m grateful for fresh beginnings. Although, I have to say, every new year that comes I personally don’t feel new – and I don’t sense that my life has changed. Yet, that change of the calendar often brings a sense of rebirth and renewal.

Agriculture has had many challenges for a very long time, and one of those challenges is the lack of young people going into the industry. Dale and Janet Veseth, who have been raising efficient beef cattle on their family-owned ranch near Malta, Montana, since 1942, are passionate about encouraging young ranchers.

Tyrell chats about the cattle cycle and how producers of all scopes and sizes will decide how and when the national cow herd will start its upswing, and about how producers can manage their herds profitably alongside wildlife.

Last spring, the U.S. Department of the Interior published a proposal with the potential to shift priorities on 245 million acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. A public comment period yielded thousands of substantive comments for the BLM to consider.

“Elk and other big game can be a positive or a negative for a ranch, depending largely on how they impact the bottom line. If a ranch is able to derive sufficient income through hunting, ecotourism or from government programs – such as the USDA Grasslands Conservation Reserve Program – then wildlife can be a benefit.”
