NUTRIQUEST's database of DDGS nutrient loadings

NUTRIQUEST has introduced its ILLUMINATE service to the dairy industry. The service offers a database of DDGS nutrient loadings from more than 140 U.S. ethanol plants, which the company says will allow dairy producers to select the highest value sources, maximize use and improve performance and profitability in their herds. “As ethanol plants continue to increase the level of oil extraction from DDGS, understanding how to feed higher levels of DDGS effectively is now more important than ever,” states Ken Purser, general manager at NUTRIQUEST.

IDEXX introduces milk-based pregnancy test

IDEXX has launched its milk pregnancy test, an ELISA-format test that detects pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) to determine pregnancy status while minimizing animal handling. With a high level of sensitivity and specificity from ≥35 days postbreeding and >60 days postcalving, producers can work with dairy herd improvement (DHI) organizations to get early, accurate confirmation of open cows in less than 3.5 hours.

New vertical manure spreader from Mills Manufacturing

The simplified design of this implement sets it apart from the competition, says manufacturer Mills Manufacturing. While other spreaders on the market rely on apron chains and gearboxes, the Mills spreader uses a two-stage, hydraulic push ram. This allows for smooth, controlled movement of the materials in the spreader.

The Groomer increases cow comfort, reduces bedding usage

Developed by Carson Tardy, a dairyman and fabricator, The Groomer is a freestall rake designed to benefit those producers who place emphasis on cow comfort and appreciate the benefits of reduced bedding usage. At the front of the rake is a large, adjustable plow that is set at a 40-degree angle. This takes the sand at the rear of the stall and moves it back up to the brisket area.

Fish kill attributed to dairy's new manure system

The blame for a fish kill in Madison County, Ohio, has been placed on Rising Sun Dairy, which is currently expanding. According to The Columbus Dispatch, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife estimates that at least 6,900 fish and tadpoles died when a newly installed manure system developed a blockage.

National animal disease research lab being considered for site in Kansas cattle country

Four years ago, the Department of Homeland Security chose Manhattan, Kansas, as the preferred location on which to build the first U.S. lab able to research diseases like foot and mouth in large animals. But plans to build the National Bio and Agro defence facility (NBAF) have run into difficulties, according to a recent BBC News article. Reviews have raised worries about virus escapes in the middle of cattle country and rising costs have cast doubts over the project's future, said the article, and the proposed site currently stands empty.
