Stop waiting for ‘The Call’: On-farm culturing can be effective

May 13, 2011
Linda Tikofsky
At the first sign of a new case of mastitis, the last thing the herdsman wants is to be left waiting for a call from the milk quality lab to tell them if treatment is worth the expense. You’ve been taught that prompt attention to the health status of your cows always pays off. Meanwhile, the case of mastitis is getting worse and you’re not sure what treatment route to follow. The call, e-mail or mailed letter you’re waiting for will tell you the results of the mastitic milk sample you sent over a week ago. So, do you treat or do you wait? Or is there a more serious issue on your hands?

Cow comfort and health

May 13, 2011
Nigel B. Cook
The following is the first part of a two-part series of articles regarding freestall design and its impact on the cow’s comfort and health. The dairy expansion era in North America, which gathered pace throughout the 1990’s and continues to this day, has resulted in the migration of dairy cattle from traditional tiestall and stanchion barns to the freestall facility, which has emerged as the dominant form of dairy cattle housing worldwide. The basic premise of milking more efficiently through a parlor, while being able to keep larger groups of cows together in management groups in larger herds, is sound from a management and economic perspective.

Treating for a cure: Extended therapy provides best chance

May 13, 2011
Times are changing and treating just to clear up visible mastitis is no longer an acceptable goal. In this roundtable, three veterinarians share their focus on quality milk management and their approach to partner with clients to do more than just clear up abnormal milk. Their passion is on eradicating the pathogen for each mastitis case by using an extended mastitis therapy protocol to achieve a bacteriological cure.

Mechanics Corner: Fuel injection: Part 2

May 13, 2011
Jim Schlund
Editor’s note: The following is the second part of a two-part article series regarding diesel fuel injection systems. Click here to see part 1. In my last column I began discussing diesel fuel injection systems, including some background information as to how technological advances such as this one came about. In this article I’ll continue discussing fuel injection, as well as other changes that were made in the diesel and overall automobile industry. When electronics were first introduced into the automobile industry, they were pretty basic. Diesels were among the last to have electronics incorporated into the engines. Many different electronic parts were created, beginning with the addition of a “computer” to the engine.

May 13, 2011
Age: I’m 61, but feel 39 Location: Riverdale, California My dairy’s history: My grandfather, A. F. Mendes, started dairying in about 1917 after working a short while as a milker. He owned dairies in various locations near Riverdale during the 1920s. He started the dairy at our current location in 1937. In 1961, he sold his interest to four of his six children. Between 1980 and 2005, the family underwent various reorganizations resulting in three separate dairy farms. My parents and I each acquired 50 percent of the current A. F. Mendes, Inc. in 2005.
