Farming operations require the use of a number of tools. Some tools are used continually while others, though no less valuable, are held in reserve to be used on an as-needed basis. Over the years, there has been great progress made in the design and functionality of many valuable tools. One area that has seen considerable progress is the use of electronics. Modern tractors utilize integrated computer systems with GPS technology which can allow the tractors to literally drive themselves. Consumers say U.S. farmers not responsible for feeding the world

A new study indicates that a large segment of consumers do not believe U.S. farmers should be responsible for addressing global hunger. In its latest analysis of consumer trust in the food system, the Center for Food Integrity (CFI) found that 40 percent of those surveyed strongly disagreed that, “the United States has a responsibility to provide food for the rest of the world.”

Inaugural Cattle Production Veterinarian Hall of Fame inductees announced

Harold Amstutz, D.V.M., and Dan Upson, D.V.M., M.S. Ph.D., will be honored as the inaugural inductees to the Cattle Production Veterinarian Hall of Fame at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) annual conference in St. Louis. They will be recognized on Sept. 24 during the Cattle Production Veterinarian Hall of Fame banquet sponsored by Merck Animal Health. The Cattle Production Veterinarian Hall of Fame was established to celebrate the rich traditions of American cattle production veterinary medicine by honoring the exceptional men and women who have made lasting contributions to their profession. Inductees are true pioneers whose achievements span their entire careers.

Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Promotion and Director General of the U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service (U.S. Commercial Service) Suresh Kumar presented the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export Achievement Certificate to Schaefer Ventilation Equipment of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. The award recognizes businesses that have benefited from Commercial Service export assistance to make its first export sale or expand to new foreign markets. “Schaefer Ventilation is a prime example of how innovative Minnesota businesses are tapping global markets to increase their sales which support jobs and economic growth here at home,” Kumar said. “Ninety-five percent of the world’s consumers are beyond U.S. borders, and we must continue to give small -and medium-sized U.S. businesses a competitive edge by making the necessary investments that will lead America into the future. I commend Schaefer Ventilation on its outstanding export accomplishments.”

The Dairy Research Institute and Cornell University establish partnership

The Dairy Research Institute and Cornell University have established a partnership with the Northeast Dairy Foods Research Center. The center, located at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, will focus on fluid milk and dairy ingredient research, provide applications and technical support for improvements in milk powder quality and help establish the next generation of dairy ingredients. These are key priorities of the Dairy Research Institute, an organization providing world-class, pre-competitive dairy research and product innovation, funded by dairy farmers through the national checkoff program.

International Agri-Center sends future ag teachers to World Food Prize

Through World Ag Expo's Concerts for a Cause, the International Agri-Center has provided a grant for two future agriculture teachers to attend the World Food Prize conference. The students will learn firsthand about the global community's best efforts to alleviate hunger and promote the human right to a stable, nutritious supply of food. As the first recipients of the National FFA Organization's World Food Prize Grants, they will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, Oct. 12-15, to attend the World Food Prize. Selected for the experience are Allison Nicole Hoover, 20, of Pennsylvania State University and Kirby John Schmidt, 20, of the University of Minnesota.

Pfizer Animal Health and partners donate $890,870 to FFA, AABP programs in 2011

Contributions from Pfizer Animal Health and participating veterinarians, animal health suppliers and dealers continue to grow in support of FFA programs and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation – Pfizer Veterinary Student Scholarships. This spring’s contribution of $890,870 brings the total amount donated through the Pfizer Animal Health FFA/AABP support program to more than $3.6 million since its inception in 2008.
