USDA has good news about low antibiotic and pesticide residues in milk

Information from the USDA reflects that pesticide residues are nearly nonexistent in milk and that antibiotic residues continue to decline. The most recent national government survey looking for pesticide residues in foods found virtually no positive levels in milk, and none that exceeded government tolerance levels.

Dairy cow fertility study brings together 12 scientists

Fertility in dairy cattle is normally considered a result of multiple environmental factors, but more recently, scientists have determined there may be a greater genetic connection than once thought, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientist. In order to search for genetic markers for fertility, Dr. Pablo Pinedo, an AgriLife Research ruminant animal health scientist, has led a collaborative effort to develop a study that involves seven universities and 12 scientists.

Meat inspector furloughs would be one day per week

March 14, 2013
Details are starting to be released about the meat inspector furloughs being forced by USDA budget cuts, which include an estimated $52.8 million cut in fiscal 2013 spending for the Food Safety and Inspection Service. According to the Capitol Hill publication Roll Call, it looks as though there will be 11 days of unpaid leave required to meet the across-the-board budget cuts that went into effect March 1.
