Cow comfort economics 101

October 9, 2012
Rick Grant
This past year, I have given numerous talks on the importance of managing for cow comfort. We know that the on-farm management environment explains over half of the variation among farms in milk production. Increasingly, producers are realizing that modest investments in housing, or changes in their cow management routines, can pay large dividends in greater cow health and performance.

October 9, 2012
Terri DiNitto
Promoting agriculture and specifically the dairy industry is something I think is very important. I enjoy telling people and educating them about the industry that I love so much. I’m often asked how I manage to juggle promoting the dairy industry, family life and farm life.

A dairy view across the world

October 9, 2012
Hannah Wentworth
I was riding on the back of a four-wheeler with the perfect cone-shaped volcanic Mt. Taranaki in the backdrop. A Kiwi (New Zealander) farmer drove through his lush green pastures, and I listened as he describes each of his Ayrshire dairy cows to me. This is one of many picturesque memories of my journey to learn more about the New Zealand dairy industry this past spring.

The Milk House: Milking during a zombie apocalypse

October 9, 2012
Ryan Dennis
It could happen. Movies have shown us how. Whether from the radiation of a NASA Venus probe, the mutation of prions from Mad Cow Disease or – as postulated by Harvard psychiatrist Steven Schlozman – a virus leading to the condition known as Ataxic Neurodegenerative Satiety Deficiency Syndrome, the threat of the infectious brain-eating undead looms over us all.

On the Edge of Common Sense: Letter to HSUS supporter

October 9, 2012
Baxter Black
Dear Mr. Black, I’ve enjoyed your columns, but I disagree with you about animal rights activists and the ACLU. I find it hard to find much fault with an organization that dedicates itself to ethical treatment of animals and one who protects our civil rights. I wish you the best.

On the Edge of Common Sense: Tranquilizing feces

October 9, 2012
Baxter Black
Jerry had what was called a suspect herd. His next-door neighbors had Brucellosis problems and since Jerry shared a common fence, he too, was required to be tested. The neighbors sold out and let the land set the requisite time. Meanwhile Jerry brought in 20 half-Gertrudis heifers to his place. He evaluated them and concluded two out of three had no brain.

The View from Here: Thoughts on the Libya situation

October 9, 2012
Mike Gangwer
The news out of Africa was not good. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Three of his colleagues were killed as well. The event is developing as I write, but let me share with you a perspective. The diplomatic corps is but a fraction of the size of the U.S. military. Their efforts are diplomacy and development, whereas our military personnel work in the defense of our country and its interests. The diplomatic corps are generally foreign service officers, spending most of their time overseas.

October 9, 2012
Good weather and daylight hours always seem to be at a premium when you’re trying to harvest a crop in top condition. Planned maintenance and skilled equipment operation can curb downtime and reduce the potential for accidents during harvest. Preventing accidents is the key to a safe harvest.
