Top 10 list of 2011's largest ag co-ops includes dairy

The nation’s 100 largest agricultural cooperatives had record sales and income in 2011, according to the USDA's annual list. The 100 largest ag co-ops reported revenue of $148 billion in 2011, an increase of almost 30 percent over 2010, when revenue totaled $113 billion. Nelson-Ricks Creamery to close

October 8, 2012
A century-old creamery in eastern Idaho is closing, ending a run stretching back to before World War I. The Rexburg Standard-Journal reports the Nelson-Ricks Creamery Co. closes its Rexburg facility on Oct. 13. Although Idaho's milk industry is the nation's third-biggest, managers of the creamery based in Salt Lake City said the future of the 16-employee Idaho operation was too dim to keep the doors open.

Study shows cancer-protective properties of milk

October 8, 2012
A group of scientists in Sweden found that lactoferricin4-14 (Lfcin4-14), a milk protein with known health effects, significantly reduces the growth rate of colon cancer cells over time. In a new study, investigators report that treatment with Lfcin4-14 reduced DNA damage in colon cancer cells exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Their results are published in the October issue of the Journal of Dairy Science.
