Just a decade ago, the media was dominated by a few (very loud) voices. We watched the TV news at 5 p.m. and read the newspaper over coffee. If, as a farmer or a manufacturer or an inventor, we wanted to tell our story, we wrote up a press release and faxed it out - hoping someone would bite. Or, we sank thousands into advertising. USDA assisting growers, livestock and milk producers damaged by Hurricane Irene

The U.S. Department of Agriculture continues to offer services to farmers whose livestock and crops were damaged in the devastation brought on last week by Hurricane Irene. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says USDA is deploying personnel and resources to assist the efforts by federal, state and local authorities in response to the hurricane. "We continue to closely coordinate with many partners to meet the immediate and plan for the long-term needs of those affected by Hurricane Irene," said Vilsack. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have suffered losses caused by this massive storm. USDA is ready to provide food, emergency assistance and other resources to the affected areas."

Breeding beef cows by appointment on one day brings a shorter calving season and a uniform crop of high-quality calves. “Existing technology is on the shelf and ready to use,” David Patterson, University of Missouri beef reproduction specialist, told cattle producers at a conference in Joplin.

Sharrards, Danielses selected as MMPA’s Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperators

Jeremy and Jody Sharrard of Peck, Michigan, were selected as the state winning 2011 Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperators (OYDC). They represented Michigan Milk Producers Association’s (MMPA) District 8 and the Southern Sanilac Local in the annual OYDC conference held Aug. 17-18. Chris and Michele Daniels of Whittemore, Michigan, were named runners-up. They represented MMPA’s District 10 and the Sunrise Local. The Sharrards and Danielses were selected to participate in the program earlier this year by fellow dairy farmers in their district.

The tournament is sponsored in part by Western Executive Protection and Pipkin Detective Agency.
