South Dakota State University (SDSU) made a difficult decision this week to shut down its Dairy Research and Training Facility by the end of June, citing a lack of funding to upgrade the aging facility.
Held Nov. 29-30, this year’s event focused on the past 20 years of dairy. The first day included two farm tours and a welcome dinner, while the second day featured formal presentations on topics ranging from precision feeding and on-farm technology to the evolving carbon credit and dairy markets.
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to listen to motivational speaker Dr. Rick Rigsby as he encouraged a room of dairy producers to grow their influence in the industry in a way that makes an impact, not just an impression.
When I was younger, I loved showing animals at the fair. I’ll admit, I was in it more for the fun than the cattle. Those calves and heifers were essentially my ticket in, so I didn’t mind the morning chores and occasional barn duty shifts.
The 2023 Professional Dairy Producers (PDPW) Business Conference was held March 15-16, in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The annualconference brought together nearly 1,400 dairy producers and industry professionals for professional development and networking.
“Exceptions are expensive,” said a dairy producer at a recent conference. This producer was explaining how his farm prefers to use sort gates to pull out cows that need attention after they are milked, as opposed to headlocks where the entire pen of cows is held up to treat those that are the exception.
Heavy snow and blizzard conditions impacted land and air travel to the Western Dairy Management Conference, Feb. 28-March 2 in Reno, Nevada. Broader industry topics such as the checkoff, farm bill and ag labor were covered.
Three years have passed since the dairy industry last came together for the Canadian Dairy XPO (CDX) in Stratford, Ontario. Much of the event will remain the same, while enhancements will provide an even better experience for the record-breaking crowd anticipated to attend April 5-6.
