Earlier this summer, Dairy Farmers of Canada Executive Director Richard Doyle announced he plans to retire on Aug. 31 after a remarkable career of continuous service to the organization, its stakeholders, Canadian dairy provincial organizations and dairy farmers.

Johne’s disease and mastitis are two of the most economically important diseases affecting the Canadian dairy industry.

To improve the control of these infectious diseases and reduce the limiting effects they have on the productivity of the industry, Dr. Herman Barkema from the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was appointed as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Industrial Research Chair in Infectious Diseases of Dairy Cattle.

Milking cows at Jeffrey Reijnen’s farm in St. Mary’s, Ontario, receive three different rations. All 155 cows receive the base ration, with fresh cow groups fed some additional ingredients.

The 27th American Dairy Science Association Discover Conference, held the last week in May, focused on strategies for improving dairy cattle welfare. For the first time, six manure agitation boats participated together in an equipment demonstration last month at Marshland Acres Custom Heifer Raising in Durand, Wisconsin. Prior to the demonstration, manufacturers and company representatives shared information about each boat.
