It’s “officially fall” for most producers. The temperatures are dropping; calves are being weaned; culls are getting shipped; marketing plans are being executed.
The greatest percentage of a cow’s annual maintenance cost is almost always allocated toward her feed bill, which can include supplement, mineral and hay.
For the vast majority of cow-calf producers, this time of year is scored with the chorus of freshly weaned calves. The majority of our focus right now is directed toward weaning strategies, alleviating stress, vaccination protocols, nutrient management and marketing of the 2020 calf crop – and rightfully so.
Fall is in the air, and if you have a spring-calving herd, you are either smack-dab in the middle of weaning calves, have dates set in the near future or already have bawling calves in the pens.
