Ventilating calf barns for cold weather

Food, water, shelter, clothes and sleep are all things we take for granted. Without any of these basic things, life itself becomes difficult for us, if not impossible. The basic needs of calves are not much different than ours. Simply put, three basic things are required: an ample supply of draft-free fresh air, a dry comfortable rest area and sufficient food and water to meet their energy requirements. To be successful in ventilating calf barns, we must ensure all three basic needs are covered.

Evaporative cooling cells help cool tunnel-ventilated barns

How to effectively cool cows is an ongoing conversation. One option gaining interest is evaporative cooling with the use of cooling cells. We know cows are most comfortable at temperatures in the range of -5°C to 15°C. However, in summer, it is impossible to get temperatures to this optimum range. What could we gain if we could get it much closer? “I believe the biggest benefit is any time you can drop the temperature in the barn during the warmer months, let’s say when temps reach above 20°C outside, the cows’ dry matter intake will not drop as much,” says Terry Lebold, Lebold Farms LTD.
