Benchmarking the nutritional strategies used on Canadian automated milking farms

A recent study of Canadian farms using automated milking demonstrated high variability in the nutritional strategies utilized on those farms. Regardless of strategy, the higher average robot milking visit frequency on those farms was associated with greater milk production.

There has been much variation in the dairy industry in how nutritional management occurs on automated milking system farms. In a recent large benchmarking study of automated milking system farms from across Canada, we aimed to quantify that variation, describing the diets fed on those farms and also detecting associations of nutritional practices with productive metrics from those farms.

Managing high-straw dry cow diets

Maintaining dry matter intake pre-calving by feeding a high-straw diet with proper straw chop length, as well as adding water and molasses, will help keep transition cows healthy through post-calving.

Proper management of dairy cows during the transition period is critically important for both the productivity and profitability of any dairy herd. Nutrition, housing and management during this period all have a direct influence on the health, production and reproduction of cows in the subsequent lactations.

Optimizing the health and production of dairy cows is largely achieved by ensuring that cows maintain sufficient nutrient intakes to meet their requirements. For that reason, high-quality diets need to be formulated to meet those requirements.

Importance of feed access in robotic dairies

September 29, 2016
Trevor DeVries
We all know feed consumption by dairy cows is critical for maintaining a high level of production. Given that, it is not surprising dairy producers put a lot of time and energy into making sure they have high-quality feedstuffs put together into rations for their cows.

Knowledge of calf behaviour improves performance, weaning

February 27, 2015
Trevor DeVries
If we look at the dairy industry, there are numerous approaches to calf rearing. While there is no one single, current-day approach that is best, there is one optimal way to rear calves we can learn much from. That optimal way of rearing calves is to leave the calf with her dam. This is the way the calf was designed to be raised and nurtured.
