As spring rolls in, when we look over our pastures, all we want to see is lush green grass and pretty, happy cattle. Right? Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Some of us may battle some unsightly weeds from time to time.

Pairs are venturing out for summer grazing, so for many in the West it’s time to put on the farming hat and complete some grazing land management practices.

Ranchers across the West are looking forward to spring – new calves, warmer temperatures and growing pastures. What ranchers should also be on the lookout for are weeds.

Today, there are several strategies for controlling weeds, including use of insects that feed on specific weeds. Paul Brusven, a coordinator for Nez Perce Bio-control Center in Lapwai, Idaho, says biological controls are proving to be successful for a number of weeds.

Most ranchers and land managers are familiar with downy brome or cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and the substantial effects it has on ecosystems – most notably, its influence on fire frequency and intensity.
