Honey, your cell phone’s ringing ... it’s your tractor calling

June 11, 2014
Allen Schaeffer
Really? Could it be possible that your tractor would be calling your cell phone? Yes. In today’s new information-rich and connected world, new farm tractors and machines can be online and connected. To understand why all this is not just possible but an integral part of the future of farming, you can thank, at least in part, the EPA.

The evolution of an organic dairy leader

June 11, 2014
Robyn Nick
Organic dairyman Perry Clutts didn’t set out to be a farmer. “I was a bit of an environmental activist in my younger years. I later served time in the restaurant business and was a general contractor for 15 years,” he says. Kentucky dairy producers overcome high SCC numbers

June 11, 2014
Tim Thornberry
There is likely no tougher agriculture sector in which to be involved than the dairy business, especially for those who have endured during the last few years of market instability and fluctuating milk prices. In the best of times, it’s hard work, but producers have had much more to deal with and overcome than just tired muscles. A couple of years ago, dairy farmers were faced with complying to specific regulations that set the maximum somatic cell count (SCC) at 400,000 per milliliter of milk, a reduction from 750,000 and a number many farmers thought they might not reach or at least maintain on a consistent basis.

La Clare Farms finds niche with dairy goats, champion cheese

June 11, 2014
Peggy Coffeen
The on-site café, retail store and creamery at the Hedrich family’s La Clare Farms is as unique as the flavors of their hand-crafted champion cheeses, thanks to one special ingredient – milk from their 600 dairy goats. Newly opened last November, the farmstead facility located along the lake front in Pipe, Wisconsin, is a dream come true for Larry and Clara Hedrich. They sought a way to add value to their product and bring multiple family members into the business, all while educating the public on where their food comes from.

In your own words... What do you do to celebrate June Dairy Month?

June 11, 2014
Ashley Mohn Student, Delaware Valley College Hometown: Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania “Last year, I served as a dairy ambassador for Berks County. Some of my June Dairy Month highlights were sampling dairy products and interacting with consumers at a Giant Foods grocery store. Promotions make a difference; labels are key to consumption

June 11, 2014
Ashley Messing-Kennedy
All it takes is a walk through the grocery store, and you will begin to realize how important marketing is today. In each food product, there are distinct differences between labels, even when the product is something as basic as a gallon of milk. We all remember the “got milk?” campaign and have begun to see commercials and materials for the new “Milk Life” campaign. But what about those local campaigns we see in our home state or regions? We might be surprised about the influence they currently have on consumer choices and the influence they could have in the future.
