Now’s the time to focus on employee management

October 29, 2012
Peter Coyne
How will 2013 affect your employees? For many dairy producers, 2013 may be a challenge as surging feed prices have driven the cost of production to new highs. Are your workers aware of this situation? Do they understand your expectations or have they been receiving mixed messages during these stressful times? Who do they go to for answers when they have questions?

California producers and processors discuss marketing orders

October 29, 2012
Cecilia Parsons
Looking for another avenue to price relief, California dairy producers and processors gathered in Tulare Sept. 20 to explore federal milk marketing orders. What they learned about the complicated and challenging process of proposing and securing a federal order prompted numerous questions – many of which could not be answered. A question and answer session also revealed doubt that enough producers and processors could agree on all aspects of an order which must be voted in by a two-thirds majority of producers and processors or producers and processors representing two-thirds of milk production.

Kardashian’s new book details industry’s squeezed margins

October 29, 2012
Walt Cooley
I accidentally stumbled upon Kirk Kardashian’s first-ever book early this fall. I read the advanced copy his publisher sent me and interviewed him shortly after the book’s release date. Click here to view my one-on-one with him. In summary, the Vermont-native’s manuscript is the best compilation of all of the gripes I’ve ever heard from dairy producers about why their industry is perpetually plagued by squeezed margins. Its throw-the-kitchen-sink-at-it approach is aided by Kardashian’s careful research into the historical context for how current industry scapegoats – such as sexed semen, ethanol, dairy policy and Federal Milk Marketing Orders – have, over time, impacted the difference between what it costs a farmer to produce milk and what he or she gets paid for it. From beginning to end, the book portrays a milk margin that has been squeezed thin and is perpetually getting thinner.

Time to end painful tail docking for dairy cows?

October 29, 2012
Over the last few years, the HSUS has driven major change within multiple sectors of animal agribusiness – and at a pace faster than I could ever have anticipated. Just this year, we’ve seen a slew of major food retailers decide to phase out their purchases of pork from producers that confine sows in gestation crates.

Looking into 2012 forage: How will this year’s forage feed?

October 29, 2012
John Goeser
The spring of 2012 started out early in the Midwest U.S., with warm temperatures in March and into April, but then quickly cooled off. Late-season frost events left us questioning whether the alfalfa crop could survive spring. The crop survived and we transitioned into a drought among the most severe the U.S. has seen in decades, stressing most crops and regions – and yielding some very different and interesting forage results.

Tax considerations for major purchases

October 29, 2012
Brandon Hendrickson
Every year about this time, I inevitably get asked the following or similar question: “Should I buy that truck this year to save taxes?” The answer to this question is almost always: “It depends.” The idea behind this tax planning strategy is fairly simple – buy business equipment or other depreciable property before the end of the year, rather than next year, and get up to 100 percent expensing to offset business income for this year. The trick is making sure the equipment is something the business really needs and not just a way to reduce taxes. It is never a good idea to let the tax code make business decisions but, if asset purchases are planned in the next six to 12 months, it is worth looking to see if accelerating these purchases makes sense.

Bulk tank cooling and storage vs. direct tanker loading

October 29, 2012
Mark Wehr
In the past several months, there have been several articles published in Progressive Dairyman about direct tanker loading (DTL) of milk at the dairy farm. The third article in the series concluded with a suggested discussion topic concerning the use of silos and chillers for milk cooling and storage. This article will look at several possible cost-saving advantages to this system that dairymen should consider when expanding or building new facilities. Every farm is different with different circumstances, so some considerations will have more significance than others on individual dairies.

Cutting corners on equipment can slash premiums

October 29, 2012
Ron Robinson
Building a new milking facility – or renovating an old one – can be nerve-racking. There are so many decisions to make, and you need to move quickly so production can begin as soon as possible. But as we uncovered, it doesn’t pay to cut corners by installing equipment that isn’t up to the task. You may save a few dollars in upfront costs, but if your system is inadequate to allow for proper cleaning, your premium losses will be criminal.

How to design facilities with reproduction in mind

October 29, 2012
Humberto Rivera
Many factors on dairy farms will affect cattle fertility, and facilities are yet another to consider. Production and reproduction objectives, as well as management program style, must be reflected upon from the initial facility design for any dairy. Functional facilities will have a long-lasting and rewarding impact on an operation as a whole. This article’s goal is not to give technical recommendations for building but rather to highlight crucial elements of a building’s design to consider from the reproductive standpoint.
