Cattlemen welcome Colombia's elimination of 80 percent tariff

The Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (CTPA) was implemented May 15, 2012, eliminating the 80 percent tariff on high quality cuts of U.S. beef. Remaining tariffs on U.S. beef and beef products will be phased out over the next 15 years.

NCBA supports USDA comprehensive BSE rule

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published in the Federal Register a comprehensive rule for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) on March 16. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) voiced support for the rule. NCBA Vice President Bob McCan said the organization has been pushing for this rule since the first case of BSE was detected in the U.S. in December 2003.

DocTalk TV show brings producers and veterinarians closer together

Multimin USA is sponsoring DocTalk with Dr. Dan Thomson as part of its effort to bring producers and veterinarians closer together to benefit future beef and dairy production. Thomson and his guests will discuss livestock management and current animal ag research every Monday on RFD-TV, 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. DocTalk topics include first aid for horses, food safety issues, the use of steroid implants in cattle, breeding soundness exams for bulls, Johne’s disease, and injectable trace mineral pre-treatment of cattle.

Genex retires equity back to cooperative members

This spring, cattle genetics organization Genex Cooperative, Inc., retired equity from 1988, 1989 and 1990 to member patrons throughout the contiguous U.S. “The cooperative’s board of directors, supported by producer delegates, authorized the retirement of this patronage originally issued for $4,798,178,” explains Larry Romuald, Genex treasurer. “The benefits are being distributed to our member-owners on the basis of the amount of business they conducted with the cooperative during each of those years.”

Road report from Kansas

Two busloads, almost 100 Missourians, took a tour of Kansas in late April. There were 15 or so from southwest Missouri including extension specialists, producers, market personnel, Missouri state faculty and allied industry reps. This was the fourth such tour for some of us and the interest in attending has grown each year.

Monthly cattle on feed reports by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service provide valuable and timely market data, but those reports often need to be put into a larger context, especially when unusual situations are happening. Of course, severe drought in southern states last year had a significant impact on cattle placement patterns and therefore careful interpretation is still required of statistics like the often referred to number of cattle on feed for 120 days or more. But, simultaneously with the drought another less apparent force came into play – the U.S. cattle feeding industry has been going through some structural change.
