FMC Corporation joins Ag Container Recycling Council 20th Anniversary Celebration

The Ag Container Recycling Council (ACRC) has announced its 20th Anniversary Celebration and Reception on Wednesday, Feb. 29 in Washington, D.C. FMC personnel will attend the event along with others who support the recycling of agricultural and pesticide containers. The event will begin at 4 p.m. (EST) and will include the following speakers: Congressman Bob Goodlatte; Nancy Fitz, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and Bill Spencer, Arysta LifeScience North America LLC and chairman of the ACRC Executive Board.

Western Kansas Manufacturers Association scholarships available

Western Kansas Manufacturers Association, sponsor of the annual 3i SHOW, continues to make scholarships available to area colleges and vocational technical schools. The scholarships are for freshman students who are residents of Western Kansas and who have graduated from a Western Kansas high school. Preference is given to students enrolling in Industrial Engineering, Pre-Engineering or Business Administration.

Time to toss out the USDA’s milk-feed ratio

Rewind your clock to December 4, 2011. The prior week the USDA released its preliminary Agricultural Prices report for November. According to this report, the preliminary milk-feed ratio for November was 1.80. Following the headline “November milk-feed ratio a disappointing 1.80,” an eminent dairy economist commented, “The milk-feed profitability index for November is none too rosy. It’s not until the ratio reaches 3.0 that it is considered profitable to buy feed and produce milk.”

When is a pig not a pig?

In the Supreme Court term which began in October, the court has been called upon to decide what is a religious minister and what is not, whether a GPS monitoring by police is a search or not, and whether the Congress can mandate that individuals buy health insurance or not. In the midst of those weighty decisions, it recently decided what a pig is. This tale begins with a cow. Early in 2008, undercover photographers for the Humane Society of the United States caught workers at a California slaughterhouse mistreating a non-ambulatory cow. It was shocking footage.
