China dairy to open world's largest manure-fed power project

May 11, 2010
Starting in September, a 250,000-cow dairy in northeast China plans to supply 38,000 megawatt-hours of power, enough to meet the average demand of about 15,000 Chinese residents. General Electric Co. will supply the farm with four biogas turbines. Biogas isn't new in China: by 2005, 1,500 large-scale biogas plants were in place at livestock farms and industrial waste sites. However, the government aims to have 300 million rural residents using biogas electricity by 2020 from 10,000 large-scale projects. Read the full article from New York Times.

"What is more important is whether the temperature that accompanied the frost event was lethal or not," he says. "Most agronomists agree that 'lethally cold' temperatures for young corn are those that dip to 28 degrees Fahrenheit or lower for some minimum length of time.

More tips for alfalfa weevil management this spring

Another alfalfa weevil scouting article was recently released by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. (Click here to see tips from the University of Illinois.) Extension specialists explain the life cycle of the alfalfa weevil consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult beetle or weevil. The first indications of weevil injury are small holes eaten in leaves at the growing tip during April and May. This injury becomes more apparent as weevil larvae grow.
