July DMC margin highest since May 2022

A continued downturn in feed costs contributed to a favorable income over feed cost for dairy producers last month. July’s Dairy Margin Coverage margin was $12.33 per cwt, the highest the program’s seen since May 2022.

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released its Agricultural Prices report Aug. 30, which includes feed costs used to calculate the July Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program margins and indemnity payments. July’s margin was $12.33 per hundredweight (cwt).

Prices for U.S. replacement dairy cows reached an all-time high in July, according to latest quarterly estimates from the USDA. Meanwhile, average cull cow prices increased in June, setting a new record high for a second consecutive month.

June DMC margin is $11.66 per cwt, premiums due soon

A staggering drop in feed costs and a rising milk price in June supported a margin not seen since 2022 for the Dairy Margin Coverage program. With few indemnity payments issued, producers are reminded that premiums for 2024 coverage must be paid by September.

June 2023 Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) pooling estimates, uniform prices and producer price differentials are scheduled to be released on July 11-14.

With prices for all milk classes rising during June Dairy Month, milk checks for June milk production will be stronger.

No indemnity payments for the Dairy Margin Coverage program were issued for the third consecutive month. Income over feed costs continue to be favorable for dairy producers despite higher feed prices.

USDA outlook sees little change in 2024-25 milk production

Milk production forecasts for both 2024 and 2025 are unchanged from last month with slight adjustments to cow inventories offset by slower growth in milk output per cow.
