Flies are much more than a nuisance. Their economic impact can reach deep into a cattleman’s pockets.

As weather begins to warm, it is easy to think you’re out of the woods from the health risks spurred by the cold, winter months – but not so fast there, friends.

Even a few parasites in a high-producing dairy cow have the potential to reduce herd performance. Parasite-free animals convert feed more efficiently, have fewer disease problems, enter the milking string sooner, produce more milk and have fewer reproductive difficulties.

Parasites impact every aspect and segment of cattle production – feed conversion, immune response, milk production, reproductive performance and overall health.

Internal parasite control is part of every herd health management plan, and it should be. Animals with heavy internal parasite burdens experience weight loss, reduced feed efficiency, decreased conception rates and even death.

Sonja Swiger is the livestock veterinary extension entomologist for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services. When asked, “What are the natural remedies for fly control?” Swiger has a simple answer: there aren’t any. 

The adage “out of sight, out of mind” may avoid a few of life’s problems, but internal parasites are not one of them. It’s common knowledge there are countless microscopic predators lurking in the cattle environment.
