After making a number of changes in the freestall barn and parlor at Legacy Farms in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, the farm has reduced its number of treated cows to less than 1 percent.

As Old Man Winter blew into the upper Midwest in early December, a number of dairy producers flew in from the East Coast, western U.S. and Canada to take part in Lely’s Journey Tour.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve been talking with a co-worker about setting goals. She was looking for a set of goals to challenge her in work and in life.

Gert Schrijver and his wife, Sonja, started Mars Dairy near Stettler, Alberta, in 1996 after immigrating from the Netherlands. At the time, they were milking 50 cows. Today, they have 230 cows (370 kilograms of quota), 260 heifers and 850 acres. They also recently achieved the highest milk production in Alberta at more than 14,000 litres of milk per cow in 305 days.

Nearly a decade ago, Prairie’s Edge Dairy Farm LLC in Fair Oaks, Indiana, began looking at manure as more than a byproduct of milk production. The owners decided to install an anaerobic digester to harvest the biogas and begin monetizing the value of the farm’s manure.

At the Wisconsin Ag Women’s Summit, in Madison, Wisconsin, in March, four women shared their viewpoints on what it is like to be a woman in agriculture and discussed some key issues facing farms today.

As you may recall, our June issue featured four on-farm processors from a panel presentation at the Canadian Dairy XPO. Since dairy products are key ingredients in holiday baking, Progressive Dairyman asked each of the panelists what added promotions they do for the Christmas season.
