February 11, 2012
Karen Lee

Back when I was just a rookie reporter I was introduced to a new phrase – “meeting season.” The established journalist that shared the term with me had been through their fair share of meeting seasons, at least 25, I’d say. At the time, our editorial team was sitting down for one of our semi-annual planning meetings and trying to decide who could go where.

February 9, 2012
Karen Lee
Poll: Dairy Security Act receives little individual support The latest poll questioning, “Do you support the Dairy Security Act of 2011?” is one of a handful of polls Progressive Dairyman has done on dairy policy reform since the producer outcry for something to be changed in the midst of 2009. Karen Lee

Karen Lee
After milking with their parents in two separate stanchion barn dairy operations, Tim and Lisa Evert and Rick and Ronda Lehman joined together to form one dairy – United Dreams Dairy LLC – in North Freedom, Wisconsin. “We were each farming with our parents at the time and both looking to do something,” Rick Lehman says. Tim Evert adds, “We were both looking for a lifestyle change and it made a lot of sense for us to pool our equity and work together.”

Three technologies turn into profits for Heller Farm

February 9, 2012
Karen Lee
After Cody Heller graduated from college in 2007 with a degree in ag business management, he returned home to the family farm in Alma Center, Wisconsin, with hopes of managing the farm’s finances. At his father’s request, he instead spent a year in the barn becoming reacquainted with the farm’s daily operations. Heading into 2009, his role at the 1,000-cow dairy was amended to leading the herd health team, as well as easing into the finances of the dairy.

Mr. Chairman, Preserve antibiotics for humans

February 9, 2012
Karen Lee
Late last year, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-New York), ranking member of the House Rules Committee, hosted a briefing where farmers and successful businesses extolled the benefits of tapping into the growing domestic and international demand for antibiotic-free meat. Slaughter is the author of the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) legislation to ensure we preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for the treatment of human disease. She was joined by a panel made up of Steve Ells, chairman and CEO, Chipotle Grill; Stephen McDonnell, CEO, Applegate Farms; Russ Kremer, co-founder and president, Ozark Mountain Pork Cooperative; and Paul Willis, manager and founder, Niman Ranch Pork Company, a network of more than 676 independent sustainable farms.

Warm box provides simple, free-choice feeding for calves

January 19, 2012
Karen Lee
As group calf feeding becomes more prominent in the U.S., dairy producers and calf raisers are looking for a selection of systems to choose from. A few companies have introduced computerized or robotic feeders, while some farmers have taken it upon themselves to build a low-cost structure. Advanced Dairy Systems has developed a warm box system that is less technical than a robot and turn-key ready for those not wanting to tackle a project like this on their own. Well adopted in Canada, these boxes first debuted in the U.S. three years ago and are in place on a handful of dairies in Wisconsin, New York and Vermont.

Michigan dairy owner finds fans help in winter too

January 19, 2012
Karen Lee
When winter strikes in the northern climate, barn doors are pulled shut and curtain sidewalls are rolled up. The chill in the air keeps most people from thinking of cooling strategies in place on the dairy, such as misting lines and fans. Yet, one dairy producer in Michigan has found value in running fans year-round.
